PHOTOGRAPHS from Tavistock Goose Fair taken in 2008/09 are on display at the town's cattle market café Food Drekly.
The photographs have been captured by the camera of Tavistock resident and photographer Russell Youles. The images, which are all documentary in style, black and white and hand-printed, show all aspects of the annual tradition, from the sale of geese to fairground amusements.
Russell has been taking photographs of everyday life in Tavistock since he graduated from Plymouth College of Art and Design in 2005 and has another exhibition on at Tavistock Wharf, 'People in Tavistock', with artist and photographer Steve Bloom which runs until October 29.
Russell said: 'I wanted to embrace Goose Fair and make something positive out of this event, which can often cause inconvenience to local residents, particularly if they live in the centre of town.
'These photographs are not only an historical record but are for the people of Tavistock to enjoy — even if they can't enjoy the fair! I would urge anyone to visit Ward and Chowen Livestock Centre on Goose Fair Day where you can enjoy some of the traditional aspects of this historic tradition.'
The exhibition of Goose Fair photographs can be seen at Food Drekly Tuesday to Saturday 9am to 2pm until October 28, including Goose Fair day on Wednesday October 13. For more information about Russell's work contact [email protected]">[email protected]
