OKEHAMPTON?s ladies president?s team played their second match this season, away at East Devon on June 5. Dawn Phillott had a very tight match and an excellent win on the 18th. Marcia Holwill was in brilliant form and won her match 6-5. Penny Deakin out third was also in wonderful form and won 4-2. Mo Holland won 3-2 then Marcia Jones had another 4-2 win. Pam Jarman and Cherry James both lost their very close matches. The result was a very good win 5-2 over all making a 17-4 points win. Wednesday June 7 saw the ladies playing the Golf Foundation Charity Challenge Medal. The net scores from this medal, taking the SSS of the course into account, will be set against Lee Westwood?s first round score of the Open Championship, held at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club on July 20. So if Lee plays to 72 (level par) all those who finish under the SSS will receive an official certificate signed by Lee Westwood. The winners stand an excellent chance of receiving their certificates as Marcia Jones won the Silver Division with a wonderful net 68, bringing her handicap down to 13. Second also under par was Penny Deakin net 69 and third on the back 9 from Dawn Phillott was Marcia Holwill net 70. The Bronze division was won by Chris Stevens net 69, second Kath Mansell net 72, and third Maureen Willcocks, net 73. Friday June 9 saw both president?s and league teams in action. The league were away at Torrington. Lin Atkinson halved her match., Trish Vick won, Kay King won, Mary Keir lost, Kath Mansell won and Jane Warren lost. This was another good 3 1/2-2 1/2 win which converts into a 10 1/2-5 point win. The president?s team was playing at home against Libbaton. Okehampton had a truly wonderful result winning all seven matches! Well done to Dawn Phillott, Marcia Holwill, Penny Deakin, Mo Huggins, Marcia Jones, Pam Jarman and Cherry James. The junior captain is Rachel Spry. She entered the Devon girls? open at Stover. Although missing out on the prizes, coming joint third but losing on the back 9, in the 15 and under division, her handicap was cut to 20.7. Okehampton are two clear in their division of the East Devon junior league, having beaten Crediton at home 4 1/2-1 1/2, they followed it up with a 4-2 win away. J Rattenbury won 2-1, R Spry lost 2 down, L Waldron won 1 up, O Kirby won 2-1, D Curtis lost 4-2 and J Weller won 1 up. Saturday was a three ball better ball competition. The scores were very high. Winning Division 1, J Mansel/K Pedrick/D Harwood with 82 points, second A Hawking/C Pengelly/ F Cooke, 81 points and third C Ball/D Northcott/J Gillard 79 points. Division 2, P Ayres/K Skinner/ R Ford 81 points, second B Willcocks/J Morey/D Jenkins 77 points and third R Prouse/A Fishleigh/J Whitehouse 76 points. The veterans section are keeping up their winning run, winning their latest match away at Dartmouth 5-2. The Douglas Bader Mixed Foursomes on Sunday was a win with 46 points for husband and wife team Ray and Eileen Piper, second with 41 points Ray and Chris Stevens and third with 40 points Alan and Marcia Jones.
