OKEHAMPTON played an excellent league game despite being without three regular backs one of whom, Richard Bolt, was at South West trials.
Starting up the slope Okehampton leaked a soft converted try from the Barnstaple fly half as he did a double dummy move in the 22. Stung into action the Okehampton pack took control.
West was dominant in the line out with Hudson and Turner taking the short balls and making the hard yards. Cox, Bird and Lawrence recycled and supported as back row should stealing turnover ball and slowing opposition possession.
Williams and Searle won the set piece with excellent prop play and Searle even popped up in the centre; twice giving the scoring pass.
Beardon, Brooks and Down acted as a back three trio, covering, tackling and supporting both in attack with thrusting runs from deep and in defence stifling Barnstaple attacks with courageous tackles.
Centres Woods and Clarke were set up by halfbacks Sizmur and Herrod-Taylor who varied the attacks and organised the defence. Half breaks by the backs were supported by the forwards as the team worked downfield. Close support play formed the basis of every try despite commited tackles from the visitors. A tremendous team performance with all 15 having excellent individual games.
Tries: Cox 2, Clarke 2, Bird, Sizmur, Brooks and Turner.
Conversions: Herrod-Taylor 3.
