AN EYE witness account from a young woman who has spent the past eight months in Baghdad and Basra is being presented in Tavistock next week

Ewa Jasiewicz will describe what life is like in Iraq since its occupation by coalition forces.

Ewa has been supporting human rights groups, women?s organisations, families and workers in the war-torn country and says she is ?shocked and appalled? at the situation of ordinary Iraqis.

Eye Witness Iraq will be held at the hall of the United Reformed Church in Russell Street at 7.30pm on Tuesday May 11 and will also feature the launch of the Child Victims of War project.

This project has been set up by campaigners who have extensive experience of conditions in Iraq.

Its latest report from Baghdad highlights the plight of the capital?s children and reports that most live ?in extreme poverty?, many suffering from malnutrition.

The report states that ?thirteen years of sanctions, almost continuous military action and now occupation have resulted in serious environmental damage? including the use of depleted uranium in munitions and the country?s inability to deal with domestic, industrial and military waste.

Tuesday?s meeting will address these issues. Admission is free and refreshments are available.
