A NEW running club is offering free taster sessions for anyone wanting try out a new hobby.

Okehampton Running Club is currently being formed with the support of OCRA, West Devon Borough Council, the 5x30 Project and Tavistock Athletics Club.

Experienced runner and chairman of the club, Andrew Vallance, said: 'I feel Okehampton is in need of a running club and it is something that I have always wanted to set up.

'I have run 13 full marathons over the past ten years. It is such a great sport and hobby. I would encourage anyone to get involved with the club and look forward to watching it grow.'

West Devon sports development officer Hannah Colston said: 'I have been thrilled to support the development of this club in Okehampton and I am hopeful that we will bring new people into the sport of running.'

The new club has been set up by a group of enthusiastic runners, who have formed it into a fully constituted running club, registered with England Athletics.

It is the first community running club in Okehampton and hopes to incorporate a junior athletics section in the future as the club develops.

High visibility vests will be available every week but people are encouraged to bring their own and to wear suitable running shoes.

Everyone is welcome to attend the four free taster sessions, the first one starting on Thursday February 12 and weekly thereafter in the community room at Okehampton College.

Registration will take place from 6.15pm to 7.30 and training will start at 6.30pm to 7.30pm.
