MAGIC and mystery filled the air last weekend as a Mid-Devon garden opened to the public once more.

Stone Lane Gardens near Chagford re-opened on Sunday with the launch of their 2004 Mythic Garden Sculpture Exhibition.

The five-acre gardens are the site of National Collections of birch and alder in a water and woodland setting complemented by fantastic sculptures from a number of different designers.

Stone Lane Gardens were designed in 1971 by Kenneth Ashburner.

The gardens were developed to house important collections of wild-origin birch and alder trees from the northern hemisphere including rare examples from Canada and the USA, Europe, India, the Himalayas and Japan.

The copses of trees create dappled effects showing off the beautiful barks and winding lanes, and shadows on the ponds lend an air of mystery to the ethereal setting.

The gardens and exhibition are open from 2-6pm, seven days a week until September 25.
