ONE of West Devon?s most successful bands, Equation, return to the Wharf, Tavistock to celebrate their tenth year. The band, which succesfully combines contemporary influences with their traditional folk background, will play on Saturday, March 26. Like the Fairports, Albions and Steeleye before them, Equation has provided the bedrock for a whole generation of top UK artists like Kate Rusby, Cara Dillon, Seth Lakeman and Luke Daniels. The line up is Kathryn Roberts, who first came to the public?s attention in partnership with Kate Rusby; chief songwriter and guitarist Sean Lakeman and electric guitarist James Crocker who brings blistering solos and subtle textures to the music. Drummer Iain Goodall can range from thoughtful percussion to full on rock ?n? roll while bass player Darren Edwards anchors the sound down. Singer Kathryn Roberts said: ?It is always a great privilege to play in front of a home crowd. But now it?s even more special for a couple of the lads who have recently moved away from the area to pay a return visit.? Originally from Bridestowe, guitarist James Crocker is now a permanent fixture in San Francisco whilst the rhythm section of Iain and Darren re-located to London and the Midlands respectively. The chief driving force behind Equation is guitarist Sean Lakeman. He said ten years of Equation has thrown up a lot of wonderful music for the band. ?We plan to record a new live album during this 10th anniversary tour so we are including some old favourites along with songs from our last CD First Name Terms. It has been a while since we played Tavistock so it should be a great night,? added Sean. With experience of major labels plus smaller indie companies behind them, Equation now run an independent label, I Scream Records. After their current tour the band members will take an extended break to work on individual projects.
