YOUNGSTERS in West Devon are being challenged to give free rein again to the poet within for an Okehampton-based poetry competition. It has been organised by Okehampton resident Derek Godfrey-Brown and is to coincide with St George's Day on April 23. The competition is now in its second year, after its first year was a great success and attracted more than 150 entries. Its aim is to encourage an understanding and expression of contemporary England through poetry. Each poem, on the subject, 'Why I like England,' should be word processed, no more than 20 lines and on one side of A4. Last year, Spreyton Primary School was named overall winners and received £150, while the best individual entrant won a new bike. There were also cash prizes shared between the other entrants. There will be two groups for this year's competition, one for 7 to 9 year olds (Years 3 and 4) and the other for 9 to 12 year olds (Years 5, 6 and 7). Closing dates for entries is Thursday March 20. There is no entry fee but anyone wishing to enter, or with any questions, should contact Mr Godfrey- Brown as soon as possible on 01837 53158 or at Larkbeare, Okehampton, Devon, EX20 4NL.
