A TAVISTOCK student has been chosen as one of Britain?s brightest sparks and won an undergraduate scholarship award from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, for her academic achievements.
Former Tavistock College pupil Alice Berry will receive a contribution of £2,000 in instalments towards her course fees at Cambridge, where she commences an MEng in Engineering this Autumn.
Alice?s interest in engineering was confirmed by participating in the Engineering Education Scheme and by an Insight into Engineering course for women, in Finland.
She has always been fascinated by the way systems work and finding ways to improve them, and has a natural aptitude for maths and science.
Alice has just completed the Smallpiece Trust?s Engineering Career Foundation Year, which included industrial experience at Delphi Diesel Systems in Barcelona.
John McDougall, IMechE president, said: ?I am proud to present these awards to such intelligent and determined youngsters.
?A career in engineering is not for the faint-hearted, and those students have many challenges awaiting them during their degree courses and beyond, which I am sure they will meet with the drive and ambition they?ve shown to get where they are today.?
There are 47 undergraduate scholarship awards granted annually.
Each student becomes an affiliate member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and is required to produce a report at the end of each academic year, outlining their activities, both academic and non-curricular.
