A FORMER train driver for Great Western Railways who regularly pulled into Okehampton Station on the Plymouth to London run is hoping to be back in the town this weekend for a fun fund-raising event.

Now in his eighties, Mark Full worked for many years as a driver and regularly did the run across the moors and through Okehampton Station, once actually getting stuck in heavy snow outside Meldon.

The event is being held to raise funds for suffers of Myasthenia Gravis — known as the Rag Doll illness. Mark himself suffers from Myasthenia Gravis and although he is unable to travel far these days, he hopes to be in the town for the day.

'I hope that this event will be a great success and raise people's awareness of this dreadful illness,' he said.

People from all over Devon who suffer from Myasthenia Gravis, carers, friends and members of the public will meet at Dartmoor Railway on Sunday for the fund-raising event, which begins at 10.30am.

Mayor of Okehampton Cllr Christine Marsh will be starting the event off.

Trains will leave the station taking people to Meldon for the picturesque two-mile downhill walk back to Okehampton.

The walk is suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs as well as walkers.

Back at the station a barbecue and hot tea and coffee will be available.

Rita Goldthorp, Myasthenia Gravis Association regional organiser said: 'By linking up with Dartmoor Railway we hope to make a fun day out for the family and raise money to provide support at a local level to those suffering from this uncommon neuro-muscular condition.'

Robin Townshend, of Dartmoor Railway said it was hoped the event would raise more than £1,500 for the charity.

More details are available from the station on 01837 55637 — tickets can be bought in advance or just turn up on the day.
