A YOUNG musician at Bere Alston Primary School has achieved a high score in an examination for cornet playing. Eleanor Eastman, 8, passed her examination with 55 marks out of a possible 60, the highest score ever achieved in the South West by a 'Music for Schools' pupil. The organisation teaches around 16,000 pupils in the UK and 700 children in the South West. West Country area manager, Jim Rider, said: 'This is a very high pass grade for such a young girl. She is a talented young lady and very much enjoys her music making.' Eleanor's mother, Sarah Westman, said: 'We are so thrilled and delighted at her achievement. When she did the exam the examiner said he felt it was going to be a high mark. 'She is now, of course, wanting to be a music teacher and she is a determined little soul.' Her music tutor is Ian Pettit who gives regular lessons in the school. Eleanor's school teachers are thrilled at her achievement. The school has a positive and encouraging approach to a wide variety of musical activities. Picture by James Bird
