A DISTRACTION burglary took place in the area of Bannawell Street, Tavistock, last Saturday and police are appealing for information.
DC Dave Elliott said an elderly occupant was at home and received a call from a man, described as white, 5ft 10ins, aged 25-27, of slim build with a pale complexion. He had a long thin face, was clean shaven and had short dark hair poking out from the back of a blue baseball cap which was pulled down to his ears.
The man, who was wearing a calf-length fawn-coloured overcoat made from thin material, called at around 3pm to speak with a neighbour. He then went away and returned about half-an-hour later, when he talked his way into the house and sat down.
He distracted the lady by asking for a glass of water, and after he had left she discovered her purse — containing cards and cash — was missing.
Anyone who saw a person answering the description of the man or anything suspicious is asked to contact DC Dave Elliott on 08705 777444.
DC Elliott reminded people to be aware of cold callers or suspicious people coming to the door. If anyone is unsure they should contact the police on the above number or, if it is considered more urgent, on 999.
