Around a third of the rubbish we produce can be composted at home. It is not just fruit and vegetable peelings and prunings that can go in either ? cardboard, eggshells, teabags and even pet hairs make for great compost. Home composting needs little effort and is suitable for everyone; whether young or old, a seasoned gardener or a novice, with a large garden or a smaller space. There is no need for hi-tech equipment or a list of endless instructions to follow. To home compost all you need is a composting bin and plenty of kitchen and garden waste. Cllr Nick Morgan, vice-chairman of the council?s environment and community committee, said: ?Composting is a great activity for all the family to get involved in and educationally it gets the message across to reuse and recycle as much as we can. ?We have two compost bins and they have cut our black bag waste in half.? Andrew Barron, the council?s recycling education officer, added: ?Composting at home is one of the easiest, most effective and environmentally-friendly ways of recycling garden waste and kitchen peelings. ?We want our residents to know we are always here to help them make home composting work ? these roadshows are an ideal way to do it.? Dates and venues for the roadshows are : l August 7, Hatherleigh Market from 9.30am to 1pm, l August 11, South Zeal Folk Festival, all day, l August 16, Chagford Show, all day, l August 23, North Tawton Town Council offices from 9.30am to noon As well as giving advice, the team will be selling home composters and will also supply free reference booklets on the topic.
