THE build up to Christmas officially started in Okehampton last Thursday as crowds packed into the town centre for the traditional Edwardian Evening.

Shopkeepers reported excellent takings and there was wine and mince pies in abundance as visitors enjoyed the sights and sounds of the evening.

From Santa arriving in style in a carriage pulled by horses kindly supplied free of charge by Classic Carriages of Boasley Cross to the eight foot high snow queen, Morris dancers performing in Fore Street and the barrel organ, there were plenty of attractions to watch between dashing in and out of shops.

Carol singing accompanied by the Okehampton Excelsior Silver Band was a huge hit in Red Lion Yard and the Charter Hall was alive with the sounds of Okehampton College Big Band and Choir, while teachers and PTFA members sold more than £2,000 worth of draw tickets to boost college funds.

President of Okehampton Chamber of Trade, William Cornish, said the atmosphere on Edwardian Evening was great and everyone appeared to be having a wonderful time.

?The weather was dry and cold which was perfect and helped a great deal,? he said.

?People were really enjoying themselves and getting into the spirit of things.

?We had a lot of emphasis on music and dance this year and I was greatly impressed by the coach and horses transporting Father Christmas.?

An extra police presence and the deployment of marshalls manning the road closure saw that events went off without any trouble.

One of the main organisers Jean Swift of Teazles said all the shops were very busy and she did not shut until 9.30pm.

?Lots of people just come along to make their wish list for Christmas before they stock up on presents and that is great,? she said.

?It is really nice to see them and share a glass of wine and a chat.

?Far from being a dying tradition, Edwardian Evening just goes from strength to strength.?

The proposed date for next year?s Edwardian Evening is December 11 following consultation with all interested parties.
