TAVISTOCK Primary School has been placed within the top 15% of all primary schools nationally for its Key Stage 2 results, it was announced recently.

A total of 79% of children leaving Tavistock Community Primary and Nursery School at the end of Year 6 gained the required standard across all three tested elements of reading, writing and maths — the national and Devon average was 64%.

Eighty-four per cent of all pupils achieved the expected standard in reading and maths, with 53% in reading and 43% in maths achieving the higher standard for these subjects — 80% of pupils achieved the required standard in writing.

Headteacher Lynnette Selbie said: ‘Within this happy and inclusive school, expectations of behaviour, hard work and consideration for others all contribute to achieving these high standards.

‘Our pupils are supported and challenged every day by skilled teachers and teaching assistants to do their very best.’

Mrs Selbie added that staff and governors continued to work hard ensuring the very best outcomes for all children.

‘These results demonstrate the dedication of all the whole school community to improve standards following a disappointing Ofsted inspection in 2017.

‘Writing results have improved year on year and are now above the national average but staff and governors are aware that there is still more work to do to continue this improving trend and to ensure that all pupils reach the required outcomes in all subjects.’

The chair of governors Caroline Down said: ‘We are understandably thrilled with these excellent results and are glad that they truly reflect the hard work and dedication of our staff team and pupils.

‘As a governing board we will be sure to continue to monitor this excellent progress, build on these achievements and wish to thank all our school community for their continued dedication and hard work.’

Devon County Council has provided a large capital investment of £1.3-million to ensure that the school’s youngest children have the best start to their school life.

The new Foundation Stage building project at the Tavistock Primary commenced the week before Christmas and is due to be completed in time for the start of the new academic year in September.
