PUPILS at Okehampton Primary have been learning about the good, bad and ugly sides of sugar in the latest Socrates Society workshop.
Children in the gifted and talented group learned about what is considered good sugar, like sugar in fruit, given examples of bad sugar like chocolate bars and hidden sugars in unexpected foods like cereal snack bars.
Children carried out experiments learning about the energy from sugar and used the Change4Life Sugar Smart app to measure the amount of sugar in a variety of foods and creating visual displays to share their findings in class.
Shea Rogers, a Year 5 pupil from Roos Tor, said: ‘Added sugar is in so many of our foods and we need to be more careful of what we eat. I was surprised to find sugar in what I thought were healthy yoghurts.’
