THE once threatened early morning commuter train from Calstock to Plymouth has been extended to start back from Gunnislake in the new summer Tamar Valley Line timetable. Running Monday to Friday, the train now starts from Gunnislake at 5.56am, calling at Calstock at 6.07am, Bere Alston 6.17am, Bere Ferrers 6.22am then St Budeaux, Keyham, Dockyard and Devonport before arriving at Plymouth at 6.39am. This is the first time for at least 20 years that the early train has started from Gunnislake and it will be all-year-round. The early train was due to be axed 18 months ago in cuts following the introduction of a new rail franchise for the South West.  Thanks to a campaign by local people, local councils and the Devon and Cornwall Rail Partnership, the train was saved and now First Great Western has been able to improve it. Rail Partnership Manager Richard Burningham said: 'I am delighted that not only did people power save the early train but now it has been improved. Thanks in particular to First Great Western for being able to make the improvement happen.'
