A SCHEME providing affordable home repairs to elderly and disabled residents in West Devon has received an early Christmas gift.

West Devon Care and Repair?s subsidised Handyperson scheme was awarded £5,000 by the Lloyds TSB Foundation as part of its latest round of grants.

The money will enable the agency, part of Devon and Cornwall Housing Association, to continue funding handyman Tim Goodwin, who carries out simple household repair jobs at reduced rates for people over 60 years of age.

Manager Marian Greenaway said: ?The grant is great news for the people of West Devon who benefit from this worthwhile scheme.?

The service, which was launched in October last year, aims to reduce accidents in the home, particularly falls, and helps with security to remove the fear of crime.

Tasks undertaken by the handyman include replacing light bulbs, fitting smoke alarms and unblocking sinks.

The agency is one of more than 80 charitable groups in the South West to benefit from a share of £444,627 distributed by the Foundation.

This year, the Lloyds TSB Foundation received £36 million from the bank?s profits to distribute to charities throughout the UK.a
