GET yourself a modern day apprenticeship, earn while you learn, so the advert on the TV states. Sounds easy, doesn?t it? But a former Okehampton College student says the reality is somewhat different. Luke Foubister, 17, who lives in Bridestowe, left school last September with seven good GCSEs, including electronics, maths, English and science, opting to work full-time while sorting out an apprenticeship for himself in the electrical/electronic field, either domestic or industrial. After a disappointing response, Luke is now appealing for anyone who can help him secure an apprenticeship in the next six months. Luke initially wrote to more than 40 electrical establishments in Okehampton, Tavistock, Launceston and Holsworthy. He would like to thank the 30% who bothered to reply, stating that although they could not offer him work they wished him well in finding a position and congratulating him on choosing a worthwhile profession. Each week, Luke scours the papers and scans jobcentreplus.co.uk and is registered with job agencies. As time marches on, Luke says he is left feeling more disheartened. ?I knew that getting an apprenticeship would not be easy but had thought that it would not be so impossible,? he said. Luke describes himself as hardworking and reliable and says he ?wants a career with a future?. He desperately needs an apprenticeship so that he can start to study at Exeter this September. If you can help, ring Luke on 01837 861435.
