POLICE are reminding people not to give bank details over the phone following a recent dubious call in Tavistock An elderly man received a phone call between 7pm and 8pm on October 11 where the caller said he was from BT and would like to set up a direct debit for his account. The caller was male with an Indian accent and was very pushy and insistent. The victim suggested they send him a form, but was told he could only do it over the phone. The victim had to hang up eventually to get rid of him. Police have rung BT on the man?s behalf and they say it is highly unlikely they made the call. BT provided a telephone number for their security department and asked that this victim speak to them. There was a similar incident the previous week, but police say there was no way of making enquiries because the calls were thought to be from abroad. Police advice is never to give bank details to someone over the phone. Only ever give details if you have called them after checking their number in the phone book.
