ARTIST Sally Hamlyn will be playing a dual role at Okehampton’s Rotary May Fair by Morris dancing and exhibiting her art.

As one of the musicians with Tinners Morris, she will be helping to entertain the crowds as well as exhibiting her artwork for the first time at the fair.

Sally produces a range of items which feature unique designs based on Celtic knotwork.

The intricate patterns are drawn in ink and embellished with water-colour paint. Her limited edition prints are hand-finished with golden highlights.

The May Fair will be the first public outing for Sally’s latest venture — hand-written family trees.

‘I love calligraphy and I have done a great deal of family research’, said Sally

‘The result is a series of trees covering several branches of my own family, reaching back many generations.

‘Many people have researched their own family’s history and have all the information stored in books and on their computer. The trouble is, it is rarely seen.

‘Now, I am able to take that information and create an individual work of art which doubles as a reference chart.’

A melodeon player for Tinners Morris, Sally is also a morris dancer and has danced with sides as far apart as Cornwall and Hertfordshire, Devon and France.

‘It is a wonderful tradition and I am excited about our performance at the May Fair. Tinners is a great morris side. They know how to enjoy themselves and how to entertain a crowd.

‘If you are coming to the May Fair, be sure to catch their performance.’

Sally Hamlyn Art will be one of the craft exhibits at the fair, in Simmons Park, Okehampton, on Sunday, April 30.

The fair is organised by the Rotary Club of Okehampton. See the April 27 edition of the Times for a full run-down on activities, timings and details on the Rotary May Fair.
