BOTH the the first two 'major opens' at Tavistock Golf Club of the season were played in dry but windy conditions.
Winning the top Tavistock prize with 43 pts were S Elton and R Bushell on countback from D Young and J Harding; third were J Thewlis and A Pope with 42 pts.
Nearest the pin was won by M Beveridge, nearest the pin in two, L Porter and the longest drive, J Berry. The Churston team of T Joseph and T Holland won the visitors' prize with 43 pts with second from Yelverton K Grant and S Bryant with 42 pts on countback from B Grant and J Collins, also from Yelverton. Visitor nearest the pin T Joseph (Churston), nearest the pin in two, I Hemmings (Holsworthy) and the longest drive, J Ryan (Bude).
In the first round of the Paliaret Trophy the men beat Fingle Glen 3 and 2. They will next play Downes Crediton. In the fourth round of the The Mail on Sunday the team had an excellent win beating Bigbury 4 and 1.
Another win for Tavistock was by Vic Eastwood and Ian Hendry at the Golfers Guide Dog Society competition held at Lanhydrock Golf Club. They won the Dudley Proctor Memorial Trophy with 41 pts.
In the mens' George Kitley Salver scoring was close with Barry Tillyer and Shaun Kiely in division one both scoring 38 pts with Roger Downing coming in with 37 pts. In division two first was Peter Kinsley 40 pts and Roger Short and Ian Hendry both with 38 pts.
The Ladies 4BBB open attracted a large field but the winners were the home team of Margaret Burn, Sybil Cole, Dawn Dennis and Fran Horton with 76pts. Pat McMichael, Monica Grigg, Carol Rider and Gill Symons (Tedhidy Park) were second with 73 pts on countback from the Staddon Heights team of Veronika Haydon-Foster, June Lee, Janet Ellis and Barbara Perriton.
The Bude team were the best visitor team with 72 pts and the best home team with 69pts were Shirley Trevena, Barbara Ham, June Kendall and Norma Thewlis.
In the ladies Withington Bowl — division one; first Dawn Phillott nett 77 and both with nett 77 were Bridget Luckham and Elaine Cooper. Division two and winner of the Withington Bowl with a nett 71 Liz Loosmore, second both with nett 72 Val White and Sue Bailey.
The juniors, in the first round of the Basil Steer Trophy, beat Staddon Heights at Thurlestone 2 and 1.
