THE weather could not dampen the spirits of visitors to Tavistock's Woodland Riders annual Summer Jam at the weekend.
Held at Tavistock woodlands near Chipshop on Saturday, the event was deemed a success. Novice riders could try their hand against the clock on a specially selected course over roots and rocks, heading down the Tamar Valley.
More experienced riders of the Woodland Riders Club joined in with a fancy dress jumping competition, all trying to out do each other for the best trick off the man made 'gorse jump' low down on the track, and there was also a bunny hop competition hosted by Dartmoor Cycles.
Those who weren't riding were entertained by live music throughout the day, and could browse the trade stands held by Dartmoor Cycles, Cogs Bikes, K9 Industries and Nookie Bikes. Tavistock Round Table supplied refreshments for the event.
The jam was followed on Sunday with the first ever club championship races.
With local star Ash Mullane out with an injury, it was a chance for the club's other riders to put themselves to the test.
After a few practice runs, riders took to the aptly named 'Krash' track. There were a handful of injuries and organisers expressed thanks to the St John Ambulance crew.
Each rider took two runs down the steep track and when the dust settled it was Tavistock's own Harry Steer that took the honours.
Bill Colwill from Launceston earned second place and Edward Hooper from Fowey finished in third position.
Edward said: 'I knew the Krash Track would be a great track to race on — it is ride-able for all skill levels and ages, but at the same time it provided some challenges to those with a race face.
'I was really looking forward to this event, the win was in my eyes but I knew I still had my work cut out with some of the younger lads.
'I managed a third overall, knocked down by two incredible performances from Bill Colwill and our new club champ Harry Steer. Well done Harry!
'From anyone spectating, it is plain to see the friendships that are formed over our rivalry and I feel the club sends out a strong positive message for people of all ages. It goes without saying that we are all grateful for the hard, voluntary, work of the committee members, the support of the Tamar Valley, the club sponsors and the members for making the club what it is.'
