A NEW attraction has been opened at the Garden House at Buckland Monachorum. The dovecote is part of a bequest by the late Dorothy Harris of Plymouth in memory of her parents William and Helena Heath. It was built by Goodmans, of Bray Shop, using stone quarried in Tavistock and Delabole slate. Mrs Harris loved the Garden House, and through her will, wanted to benefit horticulture in general and young West Country people in particular. The William and Helena Heath Scholarship was launched in 2002 and pays for a young person to spend a year working at the Garden House, alongside Matt Bishop, the head gardener and his team, gaining the experience he or she needs to pursue a career in horticulture. The Heath Scholar for 2005/6 is Jemima Wallis-Eade, from Plymouth, who studied at Bicton College before joining the team last month. Eight doves arrived four weeks ago and Jemima?s duties will include looking after the doves who have already laid four eggs. The doves were released for the first time during the opening ceremony and can now be seen gracing the skies above the Garden House.
