DEVON PGA captain Tim McSherry was hoping to achieve a double victory in the Lombard Trophy when he teed up with his Yelverton amateur partner Dave Gove who plays off nine.
The previous day McSherry won the team prize in a women?s pro-am at Teign Valley leading a team that included his wife Belinda, Dave?s wife Pat and Di Friend.
Although they gave themselves a mountain to climb after starting with a double bogey, they drew level by halfway and came home home in just 30 shots for the day?s best back-nine return of six under par.
They finished fifth on five-under 65. ?We could have done it although our short game was not up to scratch,? he said.
Seven Devon pairs finished in the top ten. They did not include Tavistock professional Dominic Rehaag who had to play off plus two.
Bristol professional Darren Robinson from Filton and amateur partner Nick Hannam won a trip to Portugal for the grand final of the largest Pro-am in Europe at spectacular San Lorenzo on September 3-7 with eight-under-par 62.
