URGENT repair work on Tavistock Pannier Market doors costing almost £7,000 was given the thumbs up by councillors this week.
The work has become high priority due to health and safety problems, with doors hitting members of the public using the market — complaints have also been made to West Devon environmental health department about noise created by the doors.
Unless work is carried out soon, an enforcement order could be served on the town council.
Works superintendent Les Bennett said the problem lay with the door closures.
'If people are going to prop the doors open then we are continually going to have the same problem,' he warned.
Cllr Peter Donkin, chairman of the properties committee, admitted the single tender quote did seem 'rather large'.
Mr Bennett explained the only other quote, which was withdrawn, was a similar figure — and his workforce did not have enough time to complete the work.
