THE Vicar of Okehampton this week launched an appeal for help to enable a special celebration to take place in the run-up to Easter.

The Rev Stephen Cook would like to hear from any donkey owners in the area who may be able to lend an animal to take part in the Palm Sunday service on April 13.

Palm Sunday is the day that Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, the crowds declaring him to be a king.

Mr Cook said he would love a donkey to accompany the procession to the church.

?The presence of a real donkey always makes it extra special,? said Mr Cook. ?If the weather is fine we will walk up the hill with him to the church, or if not, we?ll have a shorter procession, probably from the car park.?

At this stage, Mr Cook said the donkey would probably have to listen to the service from outside the church.

?Sometimes donkeys do go into the church, but as we have a carpet right up the aisle it might not be such a good idea! If it could be ridden that would be a bonus, as we might be able to find a child to play the part of Jesus,? said Mr Cook.

Mr Cook said he would be glad to hear from any donkey owners in the area whose equine pet would like a day out, with plenty of fuss made of it.

?I?m sure the children would bring it carrots,? he said. ?From past experience the hardest part is getting the donkey back in the trailer afterwards: they don?t want to go home!?

Any donkey owners who could help Mr Cook should call 01837 659297.
