THE recruitment drive for the Okehampton Starlight Moorwalk on Friday October 7 has already begun, with organisers looking for as many charity walkers as possible.

Starting from Okehampton Rugby Club, the walk is a six-mile route to Klondyke and on to Rough Tor before returning to the rugby club. The walk will be officially started by BBC Radio Devon's Matt Woodley. Once completed there will be a disco and refreshments.

The walk is being organised by a group of dedicated Okehampton volunteers called the Starlight Ladies. They are asking everyone keen to take part to turn up in fancy dress, with a prize for the most original costume.

They are also asking for walkers to bring along a written personal message of hope for anyone they know who has been affected by cancer.

One of the Moorwalk organisers, Lisa Blowey, thinks those who take part will enjoy the atmosphere: 'We had a great time last year — the costumes people came in were amazing and the atmosphere was fantastic.

'We want to make this year even better and raise money for Cancer Research UK as the charity funds around eighty per cent of all cancer research in the UK, so it is extremely important for everyone facing this awful disease.'

Last year's event raised a magnificent total of almost £10,000, and organisers are hoping for a similar figure this year.

Sylvia Arlett, area manager for Cancer Research UK, said: 'Last year the people of Okehampton were so very supportive of Cancer Research UK and I was humbled by the response from very small children to the more mature walker — it was great to see on the night. It felt like one big happy family.

'It was the Starlight Ladies' first night walk and this year we are splitting the walkers into two groups with the more energetic  leading the way.

'We are hoping there are still a lot more people out there who will help us raise money to fight  cancer, whilst having an enjoyable time, so please support us and be part of something special.'

Registration costs £10 with children under 12 allowed to accompany their parents for free. Organisers are asking for adults to try and raise a minimum of £50 each.

Application forms for the walk are available in Gillians Hairdressers, Quinns Hairdressers, Slimming World, Bob Gee and Farmer Luxtons Butchers. Alternatively you can download a form from http://www.moorwalk.org.uk">www.moorwalk.org.uk
