A FORMER resident of Yelverton was recently awarded a Doctor of Philosophy degree at the University of Exeter after years of determination and hard work.

Michael Pearn, 31, has cerebral palsy spastic quadriplegia but has never let that stand in the way of gaining his PhD.

Michael began his course in September 2004 and was the most disabled post-graduate, embarking on such a course in the country.

His PhD majored on issues relating to people with disabilities. Michael spoke to 350 visitors — both disabled and able bodied — at historic places, including Lanhydrock and Morwellham Quay to discuss issues over access. His aim was to find out how to improve disabled access within historic buildings without compromising the historic style of the property.

On receiving his award Michael said: 'The ceremony went wonderfully and I had a chance meeting beforehand with the University's chancellor Floella Benjamin, who conducts each ceremony superbly.

'I think my parents were very proud on the day.

'However, I am now looking forward to beginning my research fellowship at Exeter, as well as delivering seminars to care practitioners about independent living for people with disabilities.'
