I HAVE read the report in the Times regarding the new parking charges and fully support Cllr Pearce's opinions on the scheme being applied to the Wharf car park. As he says, it is crazy. Many of us have worked so hard over the past year or more to help secure the future of Meadowlands. The news on that front is promising. We understand that West Devon Borough Council is supporting the tendering process ready for a new contract in November 2016, which will include Meadowlands. With this process due to start soon, it seems utter madness to discourage either regular or casual users at the pool. The 1Life management team have successfully increased usage. The Swim School, Aquafit, general swims, fun sessions, schools lessons, adult lengths etc and Tavistock Swimming Club are flourishing. The centre is very successful and popular. Presumably prospective contenders for the contract will do site visits. Will they be put off if the car park is causing problems and the attendance figures thus reduced? I am at a loss to understand why this decision has been made to the detriment of Meadowlands, especially at this crucial time. I foresee restricted parking discouraging current enthusiastic participants. Along with many others I often swim at 5pm —parking £1. Sometimes it's 5.30pm — parking 50p. Earlier in the day, including a coffee in the café, I might linger for two hours — parking £1.80. In general, however, many of us can complete our swim in one hour at any time of the day. Regular swimming is very important, not only to me. I will, if I can, find a space, reluctantly have to pay the new £2 fee on most days, but I suspect others might not. What about the parents who park before going in to the premises to collect their children safely? Maximum cost now probably only 50p. I may be unduly pessimistic, but I also wonder if the new all-day fee will be attractive to the commuters who are currently to be found in the local side roads. If the Bedford car park attracts all day commuters and of course lengthy stay shoppers, will those only requiring short term parking actually find it difficult to find any space at all near the pool? The patrons of the Wharf may have similar concerns. I don't know. Do those making these decisions have any hands on experience of how the Wharf car park ticks? Is this decision set in tablets of stone? Can it be overturned? The car park works well now supporting two thriving community assets. Why change it? I actually support the plan in principle for the three other car parks, recognising that the scheme could have many added benefits elsewhere in and around the town. It is just not appropriate at the Wharf. Sue Dunstan Chair Meadowlands User Group AS a regular user of The Wharf Car Park, visiting Meadowlands pool and the Wharf two to three times weekly, I am dismayed at the prospect of the new flat fees of £2 per day for parking. It seems the new changes will enable the employees of the Tavistock businesses to fill the car parks and force those wishing to shop to leave the town in frustration and go elsewhere. The Wharf car park has a large turnover of short term users, using the nearby facilities and shops, bringing revenue to the town. Do the members of West Devon Borough Council and BID not realise that very few shoppers are likely to spend all day in town. Why not have flat half day fees, to benefit all, and double the number of spaces available and a half hour option in the central car parks? Jean Coulthard Horrabridge HAVING read the account of the borough council meeting in your paper of January 29, regarding the trialling of a £2 parking charge, I totally agree with some of the councillors that it would be a very bad step to include the Wharf car park in this scheme. Short-stay visitors should be encouraged to use the facilities at Meadowlands, the Wharf and the Library, not to be put off by having to pay a higher car park charge. What provision would be made for the disabled? My husband is a Blue Badge holder and swims regularly at Meadowlands, along with many others. At present they can pay 50p for 1½ hours parking. Must they now pay £1.50 more? We hope the council will have a rethink about this car park, it does serve three very important assets to the town. Jill Lamerton Mary Tavy
