CALLINGTON’S portreeve has requested an urgent inter-agency meeting to discuss the safety issues surrounding a notorious accident hot spot in the town, following a serious collision on Monday that led to hours of delays around the area.

Outgoing portreeve and Cornwall Councillor for Callington Andrew Long has asked for a meeting with all agencies involved in road safety after the main A388 road through the town was closed after the accident, where a vehicle hit a pedestrian near the Coronation Road junction, which led to traffic chaos for the nearby Callington Community College and commuters.

Cllr Long said: ‘This accident is the second in this area in the past 12 months and I think it is important for all agencies involved in highways, from Cormac through to the police, to review the safety issues that may come up from this and, where necessary, take the appropriate action to ensure the safety of all concerned.

‘Whilst no-one wants to see increased traffic congestion, the preservation of human life is the most important thing in this case and so I think a review of the crossing issues and also speed that traffic use this stretch of road needs to be looked at again and any improvements we can take to make things better need to be seriously looked at.’

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which occurred at around 6.45am, where a black Vauxhall Astra estate was travelling along the A388 and collided with a pedestrian.

The female pedestrian, in her 50s, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Derriford Hospital by ambulance. The road was closed while investigations took place at the scene and reopened at 11.15am.

The driver of the Astra, a man in his 20s from Callington, has been reported for driving without due care and attention.

Last year a young person was also hit in the same area and ended up at Derriford Hospital.

Anyone who saw the collision, or has any information relating to the incident, is asked to contact police on 101, or email [email protected]
