Duchy Premier
St Dominick . . . . . . . . .4
Gunnislake . . . . . . . . . 1
LAST season third placed finish in division one ultimately proved enough for Gunnislake to gain promotion to the premier division.
Gunnislake's first match in the Duchy league top flight saw them make the short trip to play St Dominick.
Two minutes into the match the home side took the lead via the penalty spot. The hosts had the better of the opening ten minutes. Gunnislake then settled and came into the match, equalising midway through the half with a superb 25 yard strike from defender Owen Locker which found the top corner of the goal.
The visitors were the better team for the remainder of the first half, but were frustrated by the woodwork on five occasions. Neil Kinger was the fist to suffer as his long range effort struck the bar. The returning Stuart Wakenshaw did likewise with a free kick before Steve Gaggini first had a shot that glanced the post before having a header against the crossbar.
Minutes before the break St Dominick took advantage of some poor defending to regain the lead with a well taken goal. There was still time before the interval for Nathan May to volley against the post.
The second half saw both sides show plenty of effort but not much more. Gunnislake failed to create any scoring opportunities as the home side defended well. As the game reached its latter stages the visitors pressed more and more which enabled St Dominick to break forward and score two further goals.
A disappointing start for new manager Geoff Turner-Moore, although with two new summer signings to return, to go with an impressive debut from Darren Small, Gunnislake can still be positive when they play their first home match of the season this Saturday. St Mawgan, who were promoted with Gunnislake last season, provide the opposition. Kick-off 2.30pm.
