TAVISTOCK Swimming Club were pipped by half a point to finish third in the First Round of the Cornwall and West Devon League at Carn Brea on Saturday with Newton Abbot the clear winners with 164 points, Carn Brea 117 points, Tavistock 116 points and St Austell 106 points. The squad were minus some older swimmers, but fought extremely hard in the Open events with 13 year old Kirsty Best coming a very creditable equal second in the 100m breaststroke and 15 year old Laura Radgick second in the 100m freestyle. Francesca Gould, Ross Williams, Will Crocker and Jake Broome also swam up into the Opens, earning Tavistock valuable points. Tavistock?s first win came in the 15/under 4 x 50m freestyle relay with Jake Broome (swimming a huge personal best time), Philip Webb, Jake Chinn and Sam Broome clear winners. Full points came Tavistock?s way again in the 4 x 25m freestyle relay with Joshua Hughes, Felix Davies, Tom Grennan-Cruise and Sam Campbell. Sam Broome swam a massive personal best time to win the 15/under 100m backstroke. The Boys Open 100m breaststroke and Girls 15/under 100m breaststroke were both very close races with Chris Ralph and Kirsty Best just pulling ahead in the final length to take first place in their respective events.
