A RARE Australian pine tree which dates back to the time of the dinosaurs will be the star attraction at an open garden day in Lewdown next month. The Wollemi Pine was thought to be extinct before being rediscovered in 1994 in a rainforest gorge in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney. It was named after the national park where it was found — Wollemi is an Aboriginal word meaning 'Look around you, keep your eyes open'. The species is now being commercially cultivated. The pine, currently 18 inches high, can be seen at the open garden day on Sunday April 1 at Anne and Bob Westlake's Alder Farm, which is on the old A30 at Lewdown. Other attractions at the ten-acre garden include a rill water feature and a 170-metre lime avenue. All are welcome at the event, which runs from 2pm to 6pm and is in aid of the National Gardens Scheme. Entry is £2.50. Refreshments will be available. A further open day will be held on Sunday May 20. For more details ring 01566 783909.
