A NEW project beginning in the new year offers the chance for anyone with an interest in researching tin mines to become involved. The Dartmoor Tinworking Research Group was established in 1991 to promote research into all aspects of Dartmoor?s tin working and tin mining heritage. Initially, members were involved in the excavation of a tin mill at Upper Merrivale, but more recently have been recording 18 sites in the watershed of the River Walkham. The latter exercise is nearing completion, so the new project decided upon by members involves an archaeological and historical study of the Yeoland Tin Mines in the Roborough Down area. It will offer something for everyone, as it will entail fieldwork in the form of site investigation and survey and documentary research in libraries and record offices. Mineralogy, history, archaeology and landscape study, building recording, geology and social trends will be among the topics investigated over a period of several years. New members are welcome to join in the venture and no expertise is necessary as training is provided. Further information is available at http://www.drtg.freeserve.co.uk">www.drtg.freeserve.co.uk
