A COUPLE from Yelverton have just celebrated 60 years of wedded bliss. Simone, 86, and Frank, 83, Jefferies enjoyed their special day with family and friends on Thursday, May 10. Simone was born near Ypres in Belgium, where her parents ran a business, and lived there until her marriage. During the war she joined the Belgian Resistance and worked undercover helping to get Allied soldiers and airmen out of occupied territories and to freedom. She was imprisoned by the Germans and spent a year in jail, mostly in solitary confinement, until the liberation. After her release she was awarded the Belgian Resistance Medal of Honour for her role during the war. Frank served in the RAF throughout the war as a Flt Officer Engineer helping to locate, recover and repair crashed RAF aircrafts. He was based in Ypres from 1944 where he and Simone met and fell in love. As Simone is fluent in English, German, French, and Dutch she worked for the Allied Control Commission in Bonn after the war as a translator and investigator, while Frank continued his job until he was demobbed after the war. He then returned home to Bristol where Simone joined him and they married. Frank returned as a company accountant and joined Plymouth firm Tecalamit in 1964. They later moved to Yelverton where they have lived ever since. Both are keen golfers – Simone is a member of both Tavistock and Yelverton and Frank has been a member of Yelverton Golf Club for more than 40 years. At Tecalamit, Frank progressed to become a member of the Board of Directors in 1978, travelling the country and abroad. He retired in 1984. After a happy and industrious life together, Frank became ill last summer and spent almost ten months in hospital, first in Derriford, then in Tavistock. Simone is now a resident in the Red House in Yelverton. They celebrated their special day together with family and friends.
