ON a wet and windy Sunday, Millfield School in Street hosted a major hockey tournament to decide which U11 and U13 girls? hockey teams would go through to represent the West of England in the national championship later this year. As Devon county champions in both age groups, the Mount House girls came up against the best teams from Gloucestershire, Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire, Avon, Cornwall and Hereford. The U13 team, led by Oenone Heal, went through the tournament unbeaten, winning against Cornwall and Hereford comfortably and tying hotly contested matches against all the other teams and at times looked comfortably the best team in the tournament. Were it not for a quiet performance against Wiltshire in the driving rain the girls would probably have won the tournament. As it was they finished a very creditable third. The U11 team finished fourth in their tournament, beating Wiltshire, Cornwall and Avon, tying with Hereford and Gloucestershire and losing close matches to Dorset and Somerset.
