Devon County Show welcomes visitors for its third and final day today — yesterday saw a total of 22,000 visitors, traders, competitors and stewards on the 83 acre site.
Despite a dismal forecast, the rain held off, and the show enjoyed part sun and cloud for the whole day - ideal conditions for an agricultural show.
Highlights included the crowning of the Interbreed Beef Champion, Moralee 1 Rebel Kicks, a Hereford Bull who has travelled all the way to Devon from Northumberland. If you ever wanted to know what constitutes a perfect pig, take a look at this Tamworth Sow from South Wales (pictured). Crowned Champion at Devon County Show, she most definitely deserves it. Congratulations to both.
There were plenty off local winners too including the Abel family from Peter Tavy with their champion White-Faced Dartmoor and Devon Closewool sheep and Tracy Marshall and Les Rockett from Bridestowe with their dairy champions. See more in the Times on Thursday.
Other show specials included the Shetland Pony Display Team, racing around the ring at breakneck speed, heavy horses and the ever popular parade of hounds and presentation of the Devon County Agricultural Association’s Long Service and Prince of Wales Awards.
The fine weather enabled visitors to enjoy the vast green swathes of outdoor space that Westpoint offers. Show manager, Sam Mackenzie-Green commented: ‘It was fantastic to see people sitting outside, in their bubbles, enjoying the fine weather, picnicking, sipping cider, listening to live bands, and revelling in the unique atmosphere a county show offers and that’s been absent for so many people for so many months.
‘As we expected people left in good time to get back for the big football match’ continued Sam. ‘But we’re really looking forward to welcoming our next batch of visitors for the third and final day of Devon County Show 2021. The last day is always a special one and 2021 will be no exception. Aside from our Great Devon Parade, we also have in store more cattle and sheep classes, including British Rare and Primitive breeds, lots of horse classes including miniatures and working hunters and the emotional sound of the bag pipes played by the Exeter Band & Pipers closing the show at 5.50pm.’
Devon County Show opens today at 7.30am. Tickets are available on the day and cost £23 per adult. Under 16s go free with paying adults. Visit www.devoncountyshow.co.uk for more details.
