AN application by Sylvan Developments to build 14 houses at Exeter Road, Okehampton, has been approved by West Devon Borough Council's planning committee.

Permission has been granted, subject to an agreement requiring funding from the developers for the extension of the 30mph speed limit, and a number of conditions including the construction of a boundary fence.

Planning officers have agreed to investigate any problems during the construction of the development after concerns about the impact on the neighbouring campsite business were raised by owner Richard Jefferies.

Situated to the rear of the Moorcroft Inn, the application area of 1.7 acres is a disused camping site with some holiday chalets still in existence. Outline permission for the proposal was granted a year ago.

Mr Jefferies, of Yer Tiz campsite, was worried the noise of construction would have an impact on his tourist business depending on what time of year the work commenced and the hours in which it took place.

Principal planning officer Chris Watson said, if there were problems of noise nuisance, it would be a matter for the environmental health officers.

'The amount of noise can possibly be controlled if there is a problem,' he said.

'We have promised to investigate any problems that may arise as and when the development takes place.'
