STUDENTS from a wide variety of technology subjects at Tavistock College exhibited some spectacular work and competed to win various categories at this year's 'Product of the Year' competition. The evening, on May 8, was attended by around 280 people who voted during the evening for their favourite products in the show. Within the design and resistant materials categories, products ranged from contemporary lighting and beautiful, multi-functional furniture through to innovative children's developmental toys. The standard of work was commented upon by so many visitors as being exceptional and the students demonstrated a vast range of skills and expertise. Food technology students kept the crowd filled to the brim with innovative cake samples that they had been developing as part of their coursework.  There was also some textiles and fashion pieces on show, some of which demonstrated innovation in their manufacture by utilising the faculty's laser cutter for their application.  Throughout the evening visitors were entertained through activities and attractions, including Tech Zone, where the computing team demonstrated many technologies that are being introduced to the faculty. There was live music from the talented Tei Daratsa; illustrations being created for visitors by 'Illustrator of the Year' Dominique Fagundez Brindle; smoothies made by Year 7 students using a pedal powered blender, and the creation of mini laser cut motorbikes. The event hosts, head of faculty for technology and ICT Pete Keegan and Year 13 design student/head girl Flo Rodgers, announced the winners to the crowd: Product of the Year category winners: Best KS5 product design, Ben Hosking, 17, with his cabinet inspired by waves receding from the sand; best Year 10 resistant materials product, Dom Newton, 14, with his compact and innovative MP3 docking station; best Year 11 resistant materials product, Holly Speare, 16, and her children's developmental train set; best KS4 textile product, Natasha Lewin, 16, with her skirt incorporating laser cut applique; best Year 11 food product, Lily Hillson, 15, with her rich chocolate cake inspired by the Oreo cookie; best Year 10 bake off challenge, Emily Conybeare, 15, with her sponge cake with beautiful strawberry icing and chocolate swirl decorations. Overall Product of the Year 2014 went to Luke Samson-Hill, 18. He beat the competition with his acoustic guitar, which, the judges agreed, demonstrated his skills of some 'breath-taking' craftsmanship. The delighted overall winner said:?'I am both proud and honoured to receive this award, since Year 7 design technology has been a massively influential subject, not just what I did in school but what I am going to do with the rest of my life. To win Product of the Year was such a good way to finish off my time at Tavistock College and a great send off from the department.' Mr Keegan thanked all the students for their enthusiasm for technology, all the staff involved in the planning of the event, the visitors who came and enjoyed the celebrations, and to the event's sponsors Towls of Tavistock, the Technology Company, Brigid Foley, the Dartmoor Picnic company, and Willy's Ice Cream.
