Axminster Town 1
Okehampton Argyle 5
THIS match with lowly Axminster was a potential banana skin for Argyle whose form had dipped in November with only three points from their last four games.
However, despite missing the suspended Ed Squire and Matt Mortimer and unavailable Ricky Wooldridge, the team put in a sterling performance to ensure they came home with all three points. The Okehampton managers tried an inventive reshuffle with full back Ben Williams on the left side of midfield in an attacking role and this worked well.
Axminster put in a spirited display in the first half and matched Argyle in midfield although Okehampton looked the more dangerous around goal.
In the first 45 minutes, Argyle struggled with their passing and had trouble finding their own players out of defence. An injury to their' chief playmaker Luke Alden early on saw him have to leave the field to be replaced by Rob Clarke but Argyle coped well with this rearrangement.
The only goal of the first half came after 14 minutes when Dave Youlden rose to head home Ben Williams' perfectly placed corner to put Argyle in front.
After the break, Argyle came out and dominated midfield and strung together some great passing movements.
They got their reward on the hour when a ball was played across to Rob Clarke fully 30 yards out, and he crashed home a superb volley. Argyle soon added to their tally as a lovely ball sent Dave Youlden racing away on the right and his perfect low cross was turned in by Will Hawking. Two minutes later, Hawking beat his man just inside the home box and fired home from 18 yards.
The visitors then rested Hawking and brought on Steve Madge who caused Axminster problems on the right throughout the rest of the match.
To the home side's credit, they never gave up and with five minutes remaining they pulled a goal back through Jamie Chamberlain after a mistake in the Argyle defence.
Argyle came back with a fifth goal. Ben Williams burst through on the left and played in a pinpoint low cross which was confidently turned in by Dave Youlden.
This was a good all round performance from Argyle with Dave Youlden and Ben Williams taking the eye.
