Railway Beacon U14s 1

Tavistock Town U14s 1

THERE was a scrappy start to the game with Tavistock players putting in half-hearted challenges. Despite the occasional break there was no fluidity to their play yet they went into the lead as Doyle chased a long ball from Derbyshire and beat the keeper to the ball.

Beacon forced Webber to make a good save from a free kick while at the other end McCall fired in a long range shot and Tavistock had a penalty claim for handball refused.

Lyle created a threat after switching to right midfield in the second half, producing good crosses. Beacon fought back as Tavistock's standard of play failed to improve with players losing possession, strikers not attacking the ball and passes going astray. Beacon then equalised after the referee awarded them a penalty.

After he struck the bar from distance and Doyle fired the rebound wide, Derbyshire, the outstanding player for Tavistock, was booked for dissent.

TAVISTOCK made hard work for themselves but dug out a great result. Sean Cleave kept the Tamarside defence on their toes and great running by Dan Adams, slipping a pass through to Cleave, enabled him slot the ball home.

Immediately after the kick-off a defensive error allowed Tamarside to equalise with a well-taken free kick that left keeper Karl Griffiths no chance.

This seemed to wake Tavistock and a great performance by Scott Pluckrose stifled any more Tamarside chances. The hard tackling of David Smyly, Mike Morgan and Paul Waddle and the busy Steve Law and James Follett took control, even though scoring opportunities were limited.

Ross Leggett had the beating of the Tamarside left back all game and persistently gave great runs down the right.

In the second half, needing to stem the danger by the Tamarside centre forward, Ollie Payne used his tremendous pace and marked his opponent excellently.

A brilliant display throughout by Luke Stephenson earned him his hat-trick and man of the match awards from both the Tavistock and Tamarside managers.

AFTER early encounters in this friendly both teams scored and Tavistock played with three forwards, Jordan Williams, Dan Adams and Sean Cleave, but also two attacking wing men in Luke Stephenson and Ross Leggett.

With only James Follett left in midfield there was a lot of pressure on the back four of Ollie Payne, Mike Morgan, Scott Pluckrose and Steve Law. They coped with it well but Karl Griffiths in goal had to make excellent saves to keep the scoreline down to one.

In the second half and with David Smyly and Luke Wakley on in the midfield the game became a more team-working affair.

Railway Beacon never looked like scoring and Tavistock were the better passing team.

Two goals apiece by Cleave and Adams and a header by Smyly rounded off an enjoyable afternoon's football.
