IN a hard fought game the home side had the edge. They started brightly, pinning the visitors back into their own 22.

After several probing drives by the forwards, a ball fed out to the backs saw Sam Lindsey burst through the defence to touch down.

Okehampton hit back but could not make their possession count and following a crunching tackle by Lindsey on halfway the turnover ball was fed to Tom Thursby who made a weaving run down the wing to score in the corner.

After a series of scrums and lineouts in the Tavistock half, the visitors replied with a penalty kick. Okehampton were having a lot of possession but could not make it count as the home defence held firm. Another penalty kick by the visitors narrowed the gap.

The second half started with both sides trading possession but after a Tavistock penalty on halfway and a series of forward drives, Rowan Perry powered over for his first try for the club.

Tavistock scored their fourth after Robin Jones ran through the defence and his perfectly timed pass allowed Mark Friend to run in under the posts.

The visitors threatened the Tavistock line but were held up by a determined defence. Tavistock's final try came from James Lockley who received the ball on halfway and outpaced the defence to touchdown under the posts. Elliot Northmore kicked three conversions.

TAVISTOCK continued their unbeaten run this season with an impressive win against a well drilled Okehampton.

An early first half try by Tavistock's Monty Burdfield was avenged by a spirited passage of play from the visitors. Matt Johns went over for the equalising try, cutting an excellent line and driving through a number of tackles.

Okehampton made good use of the slope and wind to add a couple of tries as Thomas White and Sam Cooper went over from close range with Johns adding the conversions.

Tavistock fought back and secured a late first half try from Rob Hill, successfully converted by Ed Longden to go in at half-time 12-19 down.

Energised at half-time by a team talk, Tavistock emerged resurgent with a modified front row and quickly started to dominate forward play.

With the prevailing conditions working in their favour, Ed Longden at stand off kicked effectively to ensure Okehampton remained in their 22 throughout the second half.

With the forwards winning the battle against a tiring pack, epitomised by the determined play of Ben Parkin and Harry Birt in second row, space was created for some fluent interchanges between the Tavistock backs, resulting in four further tries from Monty Burdfield (2), Hallam Bourton and Ed Longden, with two successfully converted.

The man of the match award was given to Tavistock captain Ali Dawe.

THE home encounter with Okehampton took place on Sunday with the usual 'cross Moor rivalry' — on this occasion Tavistock gifted the win to Okehampton through missed tackles allowing the strong and mobile opposition centres with the space to rapidly move upfield out of their own half.

The stronger Okehampton pack gained majority possession from the set scrum but were tested by Tavistock's forwards, allowing scrum half Frazer Bayliss to clear the ball into the backs who exercised swift handling to use open space.

The first try came to Tavistock in the early minutes through a Jez Massy-Birch sprint along the wing. Okehampton provided a great run and try from winger Alex Arthurs which Liam Wilkins converted.

Tavistock moved back into the lead with a classic swift ball across the backs from a scrum in the Okehampton 22 placed under the posts for Henry Kisby to convert.

Okehampton, with the wind behind them, took their game up a level, and a great weaving run and try from Joshua Bush saw them take the lead for the first time in the game.

Okehampton kept the pressure on and a pass from Paul Penberthy put Dean Folland through, close to the post for a try, which Wilkins converted.

Arthurs scored his third try of the game with another great run down the wing, and took the ball round to the posts to help Wilkins convert again.

Tavistock's Sam Northmore at no 8 produced some excellent play and leadership with Dominic Dewson quietly doing a forward's job of obtaining possession.

Tavistock were awarded a penalty try for Okehampton infringements on their line which put them in the lead 19-17.

Okehampton's determination and exploitation of Tavistock's poor tackle record after injury and a 'sin binning' broke up the cohesive starting back line, enabling them to run in two almost identical tries in close succession during the closing phase of the game to achieve a convincing win.

GOOD tackling that secured this victory on a sunny morning. There was a good display by the North Okes forwards with strong scrummaging and rucking.

Daniel Squire and Josh Punchard picked up all the loose ball. Billy Searle was sniping around the fringes and scored two tries and kicked two conversions. The backs were evenly matched. Strong tackling was the deciding factor. Ryan Lee played well at scrum half and led the way. Josh Bickley and Will Cooper showed excellent pace on either wing, both scoring tries.

Anyone interested in coming along to join in the fun, the next North Okes training session is on Friday night at 6pm at the Astroturf by Okehampton College or call Steve Francis for further details on 01837 840557.

TAVISTOCK lost out in this exciting and hard fought local derby.

The visitors started strongly with fast handling from the backs and good forward play that led to them taking an early 7-0 lead through the strong running of Charlie Charlton and a conversion by Zak Brinkhurst.

Okehampton fought back and gained an equalising try and conversion to make it 7-7 midway through the first half. Charlton again put Tavistock in the lead with another try that came from good forward play with Brinkhurst converting to make it 14-7 at half-time.

Okehampton struck early in the second half with a fine solo try from their centre, but Tavistock again got on top again with their third try midway through the second half.

Carter finished off some driving forward movement coming inside and breaking the Okehampton tackles to stretch the ball over the line. Brinkhurst added another conversion making it 21-14.

At this point good loose play by Slater and Ferguson in particular, strong running from Daniel Dobie, and fine tactical kicking by Tom Jackman made Tavistock good value for their lead.

But in the latter stages the penalty count against the visitors took its toll and good running from their forwards and backs brought them level at 21 all.

Despite the Okehampton line being under pressure for long periods in the final quarter Tavistock could not get the decisive score and the home side finally claimed the win with their fourth try and conversion.

Tavistock will be seeking revenge when they entertain Okehampton in the return fixture early in the new year.

Tavistock U11s 26

THIS was another good performance by Okehampton, showing good character, having to come back from a try down to win in the final minutes.

With the forwards playing well and pushing the Tavistock pack back off their own ball, this set up some good attacking moves with Reese Peacock and Brendon Horn standing out in particular.

Okehampton  U10s

Tavistock  U10s

THIS was a well contested match with lots of thrilling ball play.  The first half, was Okehampton's; their heavier pack dominated, powering their way through the defence, scoring four tries.

Tavistock did not lose heart and put in some excellent tackles, notably by Alex, Chris, Will and Harry. Tavistock ploughed on, winning turnover ball but were held up on the line  on two occasions and denied a score.

Two excellent bursts of speed from Johannes and Ben G,  fed by the forwards,  resulted in two tries for Tavistock to bring the first half to a close.

If the first half belonged to Okehampton, the second was definitely Tavistock's. Tavistock came back on with a surge of power, taking the Okehampton defence by surprise. Within moments, Tavistock mounted an attack, a technicality  denying Ethan a try. But Tavistock won ball from the five-metre scrum to enable George to dash for the first try of the half.

Two more tries followed for Tavistock, with forwards Greg and Callum both powering their way on to the score sheet.

Tavistock were all over the Okehampton players. Dominic put in a tremendous tackle to fell one of the powerful forwards, and Laurence put in several crucial tackles.

Final score five tries each.

THE teams were well matched and it was a game of few sprints due to the constant and outstanding tackles of a number of the players.

Tavistock went into the lead with a stunning tackle and pick up by Max Wright who went on to dodge three more players to get the try.

The second was scored by Al Spicer after an excellent tackle, run and set up by Louie Cherrington.

It was an excellent win for Tavistock U9s who played a great team game.

Okehampton U8s v Tavistock U8s

First game 8-6

Second game 5-5

TAVISTOCK fielded a large squad so, in order for everyone to gain match experience,  two back to back games were played with enthusiasm by both teams.  The first match was evenly contested with Okehampton tagging so well that they achieved two turnovers of the ball.

The whole team were involved in some good passing and the support they provided enabled the score triers to break free and win the match (Daniel Turney 3, Nathan Tomkins 3, Imogen Ogborne, William Risdon).

This was the first win of the season and the team are hoping to build on this for the other matches to come.

The excellent teamwork continued in the second match and despite being 4-2 at half-time Okehampton showed determination to come back and level the score (Daniel Turney 2, Nathan Tomkins 2, Maddie Arden).

ON a cloudy day in Okehampton Tavistock took on a well drilled team.

Two games were played with Tavistock rotating the whole team at half-time in each game due to the size of the squad — 19 players.

Tavistock showed bags of potential for the forthcoming season. There were some excellent moves but the team was often let down by poor passing.

The game was end to end stuff making it very entertaining. Jack Smyly, Tom Pearson, Archie Trevethian, Zac Clifford Flower and Jason Blake all went over the try line in the first game with Blake showing great support work, always popping up at the right place to score two tries.

Solid work from Okehampton meant they stuck to their task until the very end, allowing them to take the first game 8-6 .

The second game was a close affair with Lachlan Fulton, Morgan Turnock, Freddie Grier Rees and Olly Noy Scott all scoring and Blake popping up for a third try. Good defensive work was made by James Gregory, Alex Painter and Seamus Keller with Dylan Wood and Joe Burbage adding greatly to the efforts of the team. A 5-5 draw in this second game was a fair result given the amount of effort put in by both teams.
