Cornwall and Devon League Tavistock 58 South Molton 14 TAVISTOCK bounced back from their previous week?s defeat at Paignton and scored a resounding victory with an eight try demolition over lowly South Molton at Sandy Park on Saturday. As Paignton went down on Saturday at Wellington, Tavistock are now back in top place in the league. Tavistock took most of the first quarter to get going and try as they might were unable to breach the South Molton defence. But once they had opened the scoring Tavistock did not look back and kept a firm hold on the game. However, Tavistock were unhappy with their performance in the second half, allowing South Molton to score two consolation tries. Tavistock opened the scoring on the 20 minute mark with a long range penalty goal from full back Josh Sutton. Soon after this Tavistock lost influential number eight Jake Phillips with a shoulder injury, and the reshuffled pack saw the versatile Darren Cole coming on as replacement. Tavistock increased their lead with the first of two tries, one each side of half time, from openside flanker Will Brown after he was fed in midfield by scrum half Lee Greatrex. After the match Tavistock player-coach Steve Rush commented that this try from Brown was the best of the game. Tavistock increased their lead following a scrum just inside the South Molton 22. Scrum half Lee Greatrex fed Doug Lloyd on the right and Doug provided the scoring pass to full back Josh Sutton. A moment of individual brilliance then provided Tavistock with their third try. Winger Neil Evans cleverly chipped the defence and won the race for the touchdown in the left hand corner. Lee Greatrex and Mark Davey both added tries before the end of the first half and Sutton collected his second penalty goal. The second half saw Tavistock facing a strong wind and they were forced to run the ball out of defence. This they did well with some superb handling involving both forwards and backs. Tavistock scored second half tries from Will Brown, who was on hand to finish some good handling, Duncan Law, who rounded off a length of the field move, and Neil Evans, who squeezed in the corner despite a desperate tackle from his opposite number. Full back Josh Sutton converted six of the Tavistock tries. South Molton?s two second half traies came via Ken Nott and Tom Plume, with two conversions from Mark Ayre. This Saturday Tavistock travel to Truro, who are in the league above, for a match in the second round of the EDF Energy Senior National Vase. Kick-off 2.30pm.
