Women's Cup quarter finals
Tavistock . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .1
Exeter Rangers . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3
THE game started with a minute's silence, observed with respect from both teams, the referee, linemen and spectators alike for the sudden death of manager Aileen Ismail's mother Gladys Galway. This depicts the respect and friendship that comes with ladies football.
Playing against a team a division higher and without defenders Helen Miller and Candy Capeling and midfielder Janie Sivyer all credit must go to the team.
Chances were created by winger Donna Burch but with Lisa Curtis strengthening up the defence Tavistock could not build on their chances.
Sara Blowey was excellent in goal and was called upon to make some fine saves.
The first goal came from a cross and a strong shot that left the fast improving Blowey with no chance.
Captain Julie McGowan encouraged and directed youngsters Kerry Gliddon and Helen Lea and they ran and chased continuously under her direction, Aileen Ismail was strong in defence and set up midfield moves.
Another strong goal from a cross saw Tavistock 2-0 down at half-time.
The second half saw Gemma Bluett come on to midfield with a holding role in mind.
Bluett did her job and set up the move with Evans who made an excellent, unselfish tap on. The goal came from a strike from McGowan who hit a perfect lob over the keeper. Rangers then smashed in another within minutes.
Tavistock are still looking at promotion but are out of the cup.
Lady of the match: Julie McGowan.
Training 8pm to 9pm Wednesday nights. New players always welcome.
