Okehampton Colts 7

Barnstaple Colts 12

OKEHAMPTON?S front five of Wannell, Ellis, Dutfield, Turner and Davis worked hard against larger opposition all game.

In the first quarter Okehampton started well but could not turn pressure into points. Captain Webb, Chapman and Cox in the back row were always eager for work. Playing up the slope Okehampton conceded an early try in the corner after a contentious penalty decision.

They then took control with scything runs from Pete Herrod-Taylor and Mark Shields in the centres, playing together for the first time since U 11s.

B J Chapman brought power and pace to the back row, providing a target for his forwards, allowing the home side to play as a team and pressure an excellent Barnstaple unit containing many Devon players.

Chapman scored a barnstorming try in the corner with Ian Sercombe converting from the touchline.

In the second half the whole Okehampton team tackled well and played with spirit. Barnstaple, who have only lost one league game and won by 60 points against Okehampton at home, were clearly frustrated to be held to a close game. They eventually scored a well-worked converted try in the third quarter. Okehampton never gave up with the halfbacks of Quick and Sercombe keeping the ball alive and setting the backs loose.

The back three of Martin, Woollams and Alford defended well as a unit, denying Barnstaple more scoring opportunities. But despite successive attacks Barnstaple?s defence held firm and they won by one score.

This result, although a defeat, is a credit to the lads who have persevered all season on the pitch and training ground and have shown both individual and team improvement.
