MEMORIAL stones are to be dedicated to two of Tavistock's well-known citizens at a service in the parish church next month.

One of the slabs is in memory of James Metcalfe, former headmaster at Tavistock College, who died in 1993.

Jim, as he was known, was headmaster at the school between 1978 and 1993.

He previously taught at schools in Coventry, Swinton and Sheffield.

A geography graduate from Oxford University and old boy of Tavistock Grammar School, he held a strong and abiding Christian faith throughout his life.

He loved books and travelling but his great passion was gardening.

He and his wife Jenny, who is now a member of Tavistock Town Council, have four children who all attended Tavistock College.

The other memorial stone is to be dedicated to Tavistock man Reginald Williams, known as Roy.

Born in 1913, he worked in the telecommunications industry and became a verger at the parish church in 1933.

He continued to serve in this position until his death in 1989.

The two memorial stones towards the back of St Eustachius Church will be dedicated during the 9.45am morning service on April 1 by Prebendary John Rawlings, Vicar of Tavistock.
