STUNNING decorations are adorning the historic home of Sir Francis Drake this year in celebration of Christmas.

Staff at Buckland Abbey near Buckland Monachorum have been working hard to create a unique Christmas atmosphere at the National Trust property.

Sally Whitfield, head of garden and estate at the abbey, said: ?We like to add something new to the decorations. Most of the materials have been grown on the estate ? every year we plant a wide variety of gourds in time for Christmas.?

Traditional wreaths of holly, ivy and rosemary have been hung in the great hall and a beautiful garland decorates the length of the Georgian staircase.

The decorations will be on show from this Saturday until December 22 with reduced admission to the abbey of £2.50 for adults, £1.20 for children. National Trust members are free.

The shop and refectory is open from 12pm to 4pm on Fridays and 12.30pm until 5pm at the weekends.

Christmas lunches are available when pre-booked ? call 01822 853607 for information.
