VOTERS go to the polls in West Devon today (Thursday) to elect borough and parish councillors.
Twenty-three of West Devon Borough?s 31 seats are being contested, but only a handful of parish councils will be elected - the majority were returned unopposed as there were too few candidates to warrant a poll.
No political party currently has control of the borough council. The Liberal Democrats are fielding 17 candidates, the Conservatives 16, Independents ten, the UK Independence Party four, and Labour and the Greens one each.
Tavistock Town Council?s north ward will also be elected - there are 13 candidates fighting for the ward?s eight seats. The seven seats of the south ward and the two of the new south west ward saw candidates returned unopposed.
In Okehampton, nine candidates are fighting for the east ward?s seven seats while ten contest the seven seats of the west ward.
Parish council elections take place at Broadwoodkelly, Drewsteignton, Highampton, Lydford, Monkokehampton, Northlew, and Peter Tavy.
Polling stations are open from 8am to 9pm.
