VETERAN campaigner for Dartmoor's livestock, Barbara MacDonald has died at the age of 90.
Mrs MacDonald moved to the Moretonhampstead area in 1960 and very early on faced an infamously bitter winter when animals on Dartmoor suffered terribly.
In response she founded the Dartmoor Livestock Protection Society.
She was a tireless campaigner against the live export of animals.
Mrs MacDonald was one of the stalwarts who worked closely with Lady Sayer to fight controversial moorland issues — such as expansion by the military, reservoirs at Swincombe and Meldon, and the Okehampton bypass.
Long-time friend and fellow campaigner, Kate Ashbrook — who is president of the Dartmoor Preservation Association and general secretary of the Open Spaces Society — said Mrs MacDonald was a 'unique campaigner'.
'We need many more like her. She was fearless in her criticism of those who threatened Dartmoor and its livestock, but she was also a tremendously kind and warm person with a wonderful sense of humour,' she said.
Always forthright, with a lively wit, Mrs MacDonald (who came from the Harmsworth/Northcliffe newspaper family) featured countless times in th news and letters pages of the regional and local press.
She leaves two daughters, Carley and Jill, 11 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
